Just a reminder to people who send me e-mails: I occasionally post to my blog e-mails or messages sent to me. I NEVER post information that would allow people to identity you in real life. But please remember, if you send me an e-mail, I read it and might use it in our on-going discussions about China.
This is a message sent to me on Youtube today. I don't have time to respond to it (I'm reviewing for exams right now), but here it is anyways for you all to read. I've told the sender this will be posted, so he/she will see any comments left here.
"I don't understand how people can support the Beijing Olympics.... my friend said they're actually forcing disabled people out for the games to give them a better image.
And their environmental record is insane.....
Sending airplanes to soak up the clouds so that it rains early and not during the games......o_O
That's just insane.... and this when beijng has a HUGE water shortage... and has already destroyed many rivers and communities through water diversion, trying to make up for it. Plus, their treatment of migrant workers is despicable
I just find it extremely disturbing that canada and the rest of the world are sucking up to the PRC.... the party responsible for the Great Leap, the Cultural Revolution and Tiananmen, which collectively killed more people than the Holocaust... not to mention the extreme psychological trauma which was never addressed.
And to those who say "well they do have 1.7 billion people to manage, and it can be tricky if China refuses to accept the help and guidance of the west" --- my response would be they're not accepting our guidance.... they're the new superpower. If anything WE'RE the one's who are all....."guide us!!!"..... turning a blind eye to any human rights abuses to get trade deals.
I've studied Chinese history and I'm going to Beijing this summer to do a newspaper internship.... so I geniunely want to try to see the other sides point of view... because I really don't understand this attitude..."
Picture: Beijing.

Yeah, fully responding to this one would take quite an effort.
A more parochial Western view of China I've not seen for a while. Spending some time in China would be good for this individual.
Funny, I've studied native american history too and it's quite ghastly the way they bantered about half-naked with feathers of poor birds in their hair!
another one!!
there r some people always have this kind of logic: when the leaders of the country did some wrong things, then the whole people in the country should be destroyed! any things good for the country's people should be against!
this guy showed off his knowledge about china: Great Leap, Culture revolution and tiananmen. but this guy's knowledge is less than most chinese high school students! because if u read the high school text book, u will find the chinese gov have already take the "culture revolution, great leap" as negative examples to teach students that we should never have "personality cult". the text book has alread point out that the great leap and culture revolution are CCP'S big mistakes to chinese people. and the reason for these avtivties is because CCP made chinese used have "personality cult" to chairman mao. and they feel regret to chinese people!
about "tiananmen". this is a complex thing. i have watched a 3 hours documentary of "tiannamen" which is made by a american tv station and i found it is really complex! we may discuss this as a seperate topic! because i will have so many things to say about this!

really GOOD point!
make the rain coming early can keep the game working well! and also can give the sporters fresh air! so when u blame our environment is bad , we know we r wrong, then we try our best to make the air smells fresh and try to give the sporters a better environment. but when we try to make the air fresh, we r wrong again because our acts r too insane! so WHAT U WANT US TO DO???!!!
Gao Yi,
Cloud seeding need huge quantity of silver iodide and propane. It's very far from beeing environment friendly.
The chemicals used in the production of artificial rain affects climatic patterns, ecosystem, water sources, the soil, the food, the animals, the people...
Kimik
haha, this is why i hate debate. it only repeats and repeats and repeats. it's simply fruitless.
talks are cheap, but we all know you pay the price for the quality. so now i give up expecting something good from cheap stuff.
"And their environmental record is insane..."
Wow, so do you have any idea since when environment has become an issue in China?
I am so tired of these people pointing their bloody fingers here and there: "this is bad! that is terrible! OMG, how can you do this! you are crazy! you are insane!"
It's just sick. Do you have any idea of the complexity of these problems? I am sure you have no idea how your country solved (and are solving) these problems in the history.
China is one of the countries with the most serious law in the world. Several weeks ago, China banned the usage of plastic bags. Well, I guess you don't know these because your paper didn't write about this did it? It only wrote about the fucking olympics which people don't even give a shit.
Open you totally fucked up eyes and see what good you and your western glory have done to China.

Fuck off! I hope you don't get the visa you need to come to Beijing during the Olympics.
